Course Reserves

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Who can put material on reserve at Wendt Library?

Instructors, teaching assistants, and faculty of the

  • College of Engineering
  • Department of Computer Sciences
  • Department of Statistics
  • Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences

What items can I put on reserve?

Any type of material or learning object may be put on reserve. This includes items owned by the UW-Madison library system, new book editions, DVD’s, CD’s, technical reports, instructor-generated material, and personal or departmental copies of books.

What can be put on electronic reserve?

We recommend that course notes, homework solutions, study sheets, and electronic articles be placed on electronic reserve.

What can’t be put on reserve?

We don’t put books borrowed through interlibrary loan on reserve. However, we do attempt to locate and obtain items we don’t have on hand, purchase them, and make them available. Please ask if you have any questions about a specific item you would like to put on reserve.

How are copyright issues handled with online material?

Wendt’s Reserves staff review all material to make sure that it meets the requirements of fair-use before we put it online. If we have any concerns about a particular item, we look for ways to bring it within the scope of fair-use, whether that means getting the author or publisher’s permission, working with the instructor to modify the material or substitute licensed material.

When can I put items on reserve?

You are welcome to drop off, interoffice mail, or email reserve materials anytime. Please keep in mind that the beginning of the semester is a busy time, so items given to us after classes have started may take longer to process. A good rule of thumb is to give us your material one month before the semester begins. That gives us time to recall books that are in use, purchase new books, find lost books, and process items.

Scanning course material for a library course page typically takes less time to process, but it’s still a good idea to get us that material as soon as possible.

How do I put materials on reserve?

Easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Fill out our online Course Reserves Request Form, or Print out the online Book Reserves or Electronic Reserves forms (paper copies provided at the Wendt Library Service Desk) and include them with your reserve items
  2. Send reserve material to us:
  • Email the Course Reserves Request form or files to wendtreserves@library.wisc.edu
  • Send your forms and material through interoffice mail to: Wendt Library Reserves, rm 205
  • Drop off material at the Wendt Library Service Desk.
What if I have a large class and want multiple copies on reserve?

Wendt Library is willing to put multiple copies of an item on reserve if we have several in our collection. Our goal is to meet the use demands of each course. The decision on whether to purchase additional copies is based on the number of students in a particular course and the amount of use we believe a specific text will see following the course.

How soon are reserves materials accessible?

It depends on whether the requested items are easily obtainable, or if they’re in use or need to be purchased. In-house items, such as Wendt-owned texts, generally take 1-2 business days to become available for check-out. Online reserves are typically available online within 24 hours of receipt.

How long will my items stay on Reserve?

All material stays on reserve for one semester. Towards the end of the semester instructors are asked to review their reserve material and let us know if they want to continue specific items for an additional semester.

When do I get my material back?

Unless otherwise requested on a reserves form, all instructor-owned material is returned at the end of each semester.

What are Library Course Pages?

Library Course Pages (LCP’s) are web pages created by librarians working with faculty and instructors, and tailored to a specific course's needs and assignments. LCP’s may be accessed from MyUW, Learn@UW, or, with the addition of a link, the eCOW2 system.

What can I do with an LCP?

LCPs can be as simple as a link to a book record in our catalog or as developed as article PDF’s, instruction and searching guides, digital pictures or schematics, and just about anything that can be digitized.

For example, LCP’s may include:

  • Electronic reserves links
  • Links to reserve materials in MadCat
  • Links to research tools such as journal databases and Web sites
  • Tips and techniques for making library research faster and more efficient
  • RefWorks links and tutorials
  • Course contact information.

Interested in having a Library Course Page developed for you? Contact Wendt Reserves at wendtreserves@library.wisc.edu, or contact your department’s library liaison.

I have my own course page. How does an LCP benefit me?

LCP’s provide your students with the library material they need when they need it. It’s a great place to place class material, MadCat citations, articles, and library instruction online, and best of all, it saves you time as Wendt Library’s liaison and reserves staff do it for you. And what could be simpler to use? A link to your LCP can be added to your course page for easy access.

How can I see my reserves online?
  1. Go to your MyUW page
  2. Click on the Academics tab
  3. Select the course LCP you want and click on the plus sign.
  4. Follow the link to the LCP page. On your LCP page there is a link to a MadCat page listing all the items you currently have on reserve at the library.
