What's an email alert?

Many websites, databases and publishers offer free email alert services or RSS feeds. These tools allow you to monitor news, tables of contents, or saved searches. To take advantage of these new research methods, you may need to register yourself with the information provider.

What's RSS?

RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication", a new format for sharing information on the web. RSS allows people to monitor websites and databases for new information, without having to visit the site or database.

How do I find RSS feeds?

  1. Feeds can be linked to image icons:Example RSS feed icon--XML or Example RSS feed icon--RSS
  2. Feeds can be "discovered" by your browser (Firefox shown below)

How do I subscribe to a feed?

To follow a feed, you need a "feed reader". Several types exist: desktop clients, web-based applications and web browser plugins. Examples:

Web-based Web Browser Desktop
Bloglines Firefox Thunderbird Email client
Google Reader Safari RSSReader

Example - Bloglines:

  1. Register for an account with Bloglines (requires email, password)
  2. Follow instructions within the confirmation email
  3. Select the "My Feeds" tab > Click the "Add" link
  4. Enter the URL of the RSS feed.
